Dave Barry is very good at what he does. At least that's what his employer the Miami Herald says in a book jacket blurb. (Dave swears he didn't pay for the praise.) And what exactly does he do? Dave writes a lot of stuff: a weekly column, novels, and a ton of nonfiction books. In The Dave Barry 2004 Calendar, he suggests gift-giving ideas ("The nicest Father's Day surprise would be if you handed Dad a box, and there, inside, sitting on a bed of folded tissue, was the pair of his undershorts that somebody threw away six months ago, without asking him"), offers investment advice ("Small investors should stop selfishly thinking about themselves. Show some guts and gather together whatever money you have been able to acquire since the last time you got nailed by Wall Street, and send it to Wall Street"), and critiques art ("Museums should put sofas in front of all the paintings to make it easier to judge them, because the public invariably hangs pictures over their living-room sofas"). According to the rest of that blurb, Dave "makes many of us laugh, much of the time." Maybe he should have considered that bribe after all.
