"Heroes" spinoff announced

In addition to a second season, we're also going to get a spin-off, Heroes: Origins. The two series will total 30 episodes next season, though it has not been announced how those 30 will be split between the two series. (A report from an NBC insider said Heroes will get a regular 22-episode season, and that there will be 8 Origins episodes, but that hasn't been confirmed yet.)

Read the original press release from NBC, or The Futon Critic's copy.

The key passage:

NBC "bulks up" with 30 combined episodes of Heroes and Heroes: Origins, an innovative new spin-off that each week will introduce a new character—one of whom will be chosen by viewers through the Heroes website on NBC.com to become a cast regular the following season.

Election results

Captain: Adam Morand (his second consecutive semester)
First Officer: (left open, to be elected during the New Member Meeting next semester)
Grand Nagus: Mike "Baby Seal" Niiro (his first semester, formerly First Officer)
Communications Officer: Ashley Miller (her second consecutive semester)
Chief of Operations: David Henderson (my twenty-fifth total semester, eighteenth consecutive)
Constable: "Anti-"Mike Watson (his second total semester, also formerly Communications Officer)

So three of the five elected positions kept their current officers, one re-elected a former officeholder, and only one has someone new to the position. A rather stable transition, especially for one that occurs between school years.

End of the Semester Party, May 2007

Tonight's the Psi Phi End of the Semester Party. There are 16 people here at the moment; at least five others have been here at some point.

Among the movies we've watched tonight (or rather, that have been shown tonight): Bubba Hotep (Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) fights zombies who invade his nursing home; John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis) also lives there, having been dyed black as a disguise), Plan 9 From Outer Space (almost starring Bela Lugosi), and The Gamers (a movie about role-playing gamers).

The parties have changed in character over the past few semesters. Originally, we watched a couple of movies from roughly 8pm to midnight, held the final meeting of the year from midnight to about 2am, then watched one more movie starting at 2am. But for the past few semesters, movie-watching has been a minor part of the evening... in fact, at the moment, I am the only person watching the TV (and even now, I'm blogging as well). Other things that are going on: Three people are watching some sort of video on someone else's computer screen, a couple of people are role-playing from a book, five people are playing RoboRally (another couple are watching), somebody's sleeping under the pool table, and someone's updating the treasury.

The officer candidates are interesting... there are eight people running for Captain, which is a lot more than usual. Since current Grand Nagus (treasurer) Ryan is graduating this semester, there is no incumbent, but only two people are running (one who's also running for Captain, and one who was nominated in absentia and hasn't confirmed whether or not he's actually interested in running). So we might need to re-open nominations for that position (which will likely use up all the runoff ballots I printed off).

More later...

Weekend update

I didn't do a whole lot this weekend, but there was still a little excitement...

My mom and Dan went to Iowa to visit my grandmother and my great-great-aunt on Friday. They were supposed to come back today (Sunday), but the car broke down about 20 miles in from the Illinois border, and Josh had to drive out to help them. They'll be coming back Monday sometime, hopefully.

Earlier today, we watched Ju-on: The Grudge, the Japanese remake of Ju-on and "premake" of The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Or rather, I watched it, and Josh watched part of it and slept through the rest.

In other news, Marisa is moving out of the house, going to live in Bloomington-Normal. So it'll soon be just me and Josh living here again. That might be a little weird, so I might start looking for another roommate. However, given that the bathroom still isn't done, it might be difficult to get somebody who would be willing to put up with that.

I didn't get seriously April Fools'ed today, nor did I play any jokes. However, I was amused by this year's entry in Google's annual April Fools' Day gag, Google TiSP, a new way to connect to the internet. They actually had two this year, the other one being Gmail Paper.

Also, there was a collaborative gag over at TrekBBS's Trek Literature board, where several of the Star Trek writers claimed to be involved with a Star Trek TV reality/game show called Starfleet Academy, to be produced by Survivor's Mark Burnett. The thread is here, though the discussion doesn't begin until TG Theodore's March 31 post, about halfway down the second page.

This coming Tuesday night, I'm going to go see Peter Robinson, one of President Reagan's speechwriters, and the one who wrote the "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech, speak at Reagan's alma mater, Eureka College. He will be talking about his book, How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life. Should be interesting.

I guess that's about it. Time for bed.

Brother's birthday

Monday evening, I went over to Bloomington-Normal for my brother Dan's 25th birthday party. Mom and Dad were both there, as were several of Dan's friends. We had pizza (what would a Henderson family gathering be without pizza?) and birthday cake.

Three of Dan's friends, Nate, Alan, and Jake, played a game of Cranium with Dan and me. Nate and Alan were on one team, Dan and I were on another team, and Jake was on both teams, by switching each card. (He sat out on cards that were direct competition between the two teams, but played all of them which were challenges for one team only.) Our team got to an early lead, getting about two thirds of the way around the board while the other team was only about a quarter of the way around. But then we got stuck at the three-quarters mark, and the other team got some pretty good die rolls and a few two-turns-in-a-row things, racing around us to win the game.

It was pretty late when we finished, but I got home around midnight (IIRC) and went to bed, saving Prison Break and 24 for later in the week.

What's been happening recently...

Let's see... since the first of the year, the following things have happened:

One of my aunts (Bev, my dad's half-sister), one of my cats (Ronnie, the youngest of the family), and one of my uncles (Willis, my dad's half-brother) died, all within the first three weeks of the year. January pretty much sucked.

Josh moved back to town. He is currently residing here, though we are not "together". Interestingly, we have been much better friends now that we are not involved romantically.

I went to see 300 with several members of Psi Phi. At Steak 'n Shake afterwards, we unanimously agreed that it was awesome. (And since Will was there, that's saying a lot. Will abstains from or opposes nearly every vote in the club.)

I was very fearful of losing my job, due to the side-effects of depression. As a compromise, I went from full-time to part-time, which lost me the benefit of my employer paying my health insurance premiums, so now I have to pay a couple hundred dollars extra per month to keep that. Fortunately, things seem to have settled down for the most part, after a change of medication, so I hope to go back to full-time soon.

The bathroom is significantly closer to completion. Joe, Dad, and I worked on putting up drywall and installing the new window, so now we don't have exposed 2x4s everywhere. We also got a new toilet put in. There's still no sink (we're going to wait until after we get the floor tiled), but it's coming along.

I finally saw Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, and I nearly laughed my lungs out. I had purchased the movie at Wal*Mart, and it came with a free "Glorious Kazakhstan" T-shirt. I wore that to work one day last week, but nobody seemed to notice.

I've been to the Jukebox comedy club three or four times. Joe has a routine that he gives on open mic night (Thursdays), and he's getting pretty good at it. After the amateurs perform, they have the headliner from that Friday's show perform. One that I really enjoyed was Dan St. Paul.

Hmm... seems like there was more, but I suppose that's enough for now. I hope to blog on a more regular basis in the future.

Peoria Pundit Bill Dennis hosted a Blogger's Bash tonight at The Sports Page, a neighborhood bar/restaurant over on Sheridan Rd., just north of McClure, starting at 7:00pm. I went, as did Josh (who, by the way, returned to Peoria a couple of weeks ago and is staying at my house, but only as a friend). Read on for my "time-delayed liveblogging". . ..

Josh and I got here around 7:10pm. Bill Dennis (The Peoria Pundit) was here already, waiting for people to show up. We started chatting about various things, such as wireless internet access (The Sports Page doesn't provide any) and storms (such as in Florida).

A couple of minutes later, Mike (<a href="http://peoriacountypolitics.blogspot.com/>Peoria County Politics) arrived, and the bartender arrived to take our orders. I just got a Dr Pepper and some cheese sticks, which were pretty good (though I didn't care for the sauce). Among the topics that were discussed:

* Ghost Rider looks good.
* Dawn of the Dead (the original) had "social commentary".
* In this season's premiere of 24, Jack took a "bite out of crime".
* Discussion about Chase Ingersoll (a guy who had had some issues with the city council) and restraining orders.

Peoria City Councilman Gary Sandburg stopped in around 7:25. Five minutes later, Brad Carter, a candidate for city council, arrived.

Discussions turned to hard drive failures, how Bill has dealt with anonymous commentors, and an amusing story about a lady from Germantown Hills (a small town across the river) who was upset that since the Murray Baker Bridge, which carries I-74 over the Illinois River, has switched to more efficient lighting, she can no longer see the bridge from her house.

At 7:33, Paul Wilkerson (I don't know what his blog is) arrived.

Discussion continued to how many bloggers have a focus that they're very knowledgeable about. You know you'll find interesting information about their particular subject, but when they wander into other areas, sometimes they get a little off.

Off and on throughout the evening, tThere was quite a bit of discussion about the Kellar Branch of the railroad line, and how some members on the city council want to shut that branch down and turn it into a recreational trail. Some of the issues brought up related to how many people use existing trails, such as the Pimiteoui Trail at the riverfront; why the trails in Glen Oak Park are not maintained; and what the business plan for recouping the costs of shutting down a functional rail line and constructing and maintaining a trail will be. One person (I think it was Gary, but I'm not certain it was him) said that the Peoria Journal-Star used to get their paper shipped in on that line. Perhaps that is why the newspaper is for the trail... "Well, we don't need it anymore!"

C.J. Summers of the Peoria Chronicle arrived around 7:45. Bill commented that he'd performed a Google Fight between "Peoria Pundit" and "Peoria Chronicle", and the Chronicle had about 5,000 more results. (However, as of this search, the Chronicle actually has about 92,000 more hits: 213,000 to 305,000.)

There was some talk about Peoria Promise (stories at Peoria.com, Peoria Chronicle), the recently-announced program whereby any student graduating from a Peoria public school, after having attended them for at least the last two grades, will be eligible for a scholarship to Illinois Central College. The program is privately funded by donations, not tax dollars.

Much was made of the plan to install cameras along Peoria Avenue and perhaps other high-crime areas to catch drug dealers on tape. What are the privacy implications?

I'm going to stop translating into full paragraphs now, and just leave you with my notes from the rest of the event as they were written at the time...

Business plan for the Trolley.
Idea: District 150 should have a board made up of the poorest people in the city.
I-74 to Forrest Hill, cameras on the streets to catch drug dealers, along Peoria Ave. and other areas.
Neighborhood assoc., police, nobody could really help.
Finally talked to Bob Manning. Mayor came to his house, chewed out police about their indifference.
Discussion about the Police Chief, City Manager, firing employees (such as cops).
-Josh left around 8:00.
Peoria management gets overtime; shouldn't, but it gets approved anyway.
"Bradley University Drunken Pedestrians" -- Bill's secondary suggestion for new name.
"Essential Services First!"
Barbara Van Auken speaks Greek (re: the blog name "Omphaloskepsis")
Main purpose of government is to protect citizens... police, fire, roads, sidewalks. If not that, then what are they good for?
Discussion about split vote (Peoria has 5-vote thing... vote for one person, they get 5 votes; vote for five people, they get 1 vote; vote for two, they get 2.5 votes.)
Brad Carter is only Republican in his family. (His last name is Carter, and he's from Georgia.)
Bill is only non-Democrat in his family.
Bill's grandmother ... delegate for JFK at DNC, friend of Paul Simon.
Apparently, Jay Janssen is a regular down at Big Al's. (somebody claimed)
(...)
PottstownPundit.BlogSpot.com
Problem with javascript error, using different browsers, dumping cache, refreshing DNS.
Discussion about possible smoking ban in Peoria. Brad said he was against it; George Jacob said we should investigate it for the health issues, and Brad said "Then ban selling beer in bars."
Bill needs some FOIA templates.
School district charges $0.25/page for FOIA requests.
I.E.P. - Individualized Education Program, federal program but flawed (several experiences reported)
-Mike left ~9:00. He has sheep which are lambing now. (Gary: Already? Mike: Depends on when you let the ram out.)
Google videos -- London bombing, an hour and a half long, top 10.
False Flag concept... Bay of Tonkin, US invaded but wanted foreign powers to believe someone else did it.
Discussion about Barack Obama, his world perspective, what benefits he might bring.
More discussion about the city council. Level of involvement, balancing role in government with role in family.
Why big debate about $5k or $20k spending, but no eyebrows raised when $2.5m spending issue comes up?
(Embarassing story here)
Days off, work schedule changes.
Paul offered police his roof as sniper rifle position for cars with loud music.
DSL/cable internet, internet sharing
Eyebrows McGee, squirrel got in her house.
IP address, Dr. Carroll no longer posting.
Parking deck issue (OSF got away with parking deck closer than 25 feet from alley but Bradley is doing 25 feet.)
IL-AWC re-purchase agreement, City of Peoria buyback clause.
"Time-delayed liveblogging"
Brad's waiting for his first PJS editorial cartoon caricature.
Amateur drawing of a leprechaun.
Gary ran out of gas around 2:30pm today, over on Forrest Hill. First driver to pass by was city employee, drove him to gas station and back.
Bill said "misunderestimated". Ha, ha.
The dining room at Leonardo's is half in Peoria, half in Peoria Heights.
Super Bowl is always about defense.
Bill: Bears by 12
Brad: Bears by 6
"The Bears are nothing more than grown-up Cubs. Losers!" -- Gary
Cubs can't win for another couple years, in order to satisfy "Back to the Future". "You can't change future history!"
Bill thinks Bears have been underestimated this whole season
Institute and Main, brick house, sorority building, NE corner, BU wants to buy it (or maybe did?)
BU pedestrians cross against the "Don't Walk".
Bill and Gary made a bet: If Bears win, Gary will buy pizza at Whitey's Tuesday night. If Colts win, Bill won't show up. :-)
Discussion about council race financing, PayPal vs. other specialized sites, need for people without political record to spend money, but not so much for established candidates.
+Angie & Mr. Walker, WMBD, ~10:25
I left around 10:30.

When I got back from the trip to South Dakota (more about the trip in a later post), I found out from my mom that her dog Kodiak, or Kodi as we called him, had died while we were gone. As I recall, Mom had gotten Kodi well over fifteen years ago, back when I still lived with her part-time. He was pretty old, having arthritis that made it hard to go up and down the few steps in the backyard, but he was still mobile and friendly. He is now buried in the back yard at Mom's house. I miss him.

Yesterday, my aunt Bev died. She's my dad's older sister, and the news seems to have hit him particularly hard. He's gone up to the Chicago area, where she, her husband Jim, and several of our relatives live. I plan on going up there for the funeral as well, though I don't yet know what day that will be. Her death hasn't quite sunk in for me yet. I've known her practically all my life... she would come visit my grandmother a few times a year when I was young, I visited her at least once during my year at IMSA, and I've gone to see her several times with my dad over the years.

Right now, I'm really, really hoping that the "bad things come in threes" thing doesn't happen now.

There and back again, part 1: There

The plan was to leave for South Dakota on the morning of Friday, December 22, around 7am. However, since Dad hadn't packed yet, we didn't leave until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. I could've worked a half-day Friday and saved some of my comp time for later use, but oh well.

We went up I-39 into Wisconsin, which I haven't been to before. I thought all the talk about Wisconsin's pride in their cheese had to be exaggerated, but no, it's real. There were at least a dozen big signs on building that said "CHEESE" along the route; in at least one instance, the big word "CHEESE" had a smaller word "FOOD" underneath, suggesting that perhaps that business sees cheese as a bigger attraction than any other type of food, or perhaps they see cheese itself as something so wonderful that it surpasses being labeled as food.

We continued through Minnesota. I've been at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport at least a couple times, but this was my first time anywhere else in the state. It was pretty dark as we traveled through here, so we didn't really get to see that much, although we did stop briefly at a hotel/lodge with a giant funnel-type thing that looked like it might be some sort of ride.

We stopped for supper at a Pizza Hut Italian Bistro. I've seen plenty of Pizza Huts, but this one also had a wide variety of Italian foods, kind of like an Avanti's. There was a bit of a delay here, since the server heard "Pan" when my dad said "Thin". After dinner, we got back on the road.

We finally arrived in Milbank, SD around 6am Saturday, and got checked into the motel. Much sleep ensued.

To be continued...

Monkey
You are very intelligent and able to influence people. An enthusiastic achiever, you are easily discouraged and confused. Avoid Tigers. Seek a Dragon or a Rat.

I was born in 1976. I can easily be described as eccentric, and my life is indeed complex. I try to balance passion/emotion with logic/reason, but I've probably started leaning more toward the passion side of things in the past three weeks. Abundant health? Dubious. But three out of four's not bad, and comparing myself to the other eleven options, this one is at least in the top two of matching me (Ox's description is about equally close).

Josh was born in 1980. He is quite intelligent, and he controls my mind with sonic pressure (in-joke.) I will respectfully decline to comment on the negative components.

Now, I don't believe in horoscopes, zodiacs, etc. It's just some guy sitting in a room, making up stuff, as far as I'm concerned. But the law of averages suggests that, just like those random-number-generated memes over on LiveJournal, every once in a while, they'll end up about right for someone. So maybe this is one for me and Josh.

Question: How long do I have to wait to marry my monkey so that it counts as "late in life"? :-)

2004 Year in Review, part 5: May

Here's the things that happened in May, 2004...

Here's the things that happened in May, 2004...

I'm not sure there was any specific event that triggered it, but in May, I started feeling a little better about the situation with Aaron. Maybe it was that as the time grew nearer that he would be leaving, I realized that if things didn't get better before he left, chances are they never would. Maybe it was something else. I don't know. But whatever the cause, I knew that this journey was right for him.

In looking back on it now, it seems pretty clear that I'd been going through the classic stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, though not necessarily in the usual order) regarding Aaron leaving. When I first discovered the note, there was Anger. Much anger. It's a very good thing that I had several days to work through that before he returned, because if I'd discovered that shortly before he'd returned, there's a good chance that our friendship would've been irreparable. But I got over it, and moved onto Denial... surely Aaron didn't really intend to leave; Melissa had probably just been exaggerating or playing, and Aaron hadn't told me about it because there was nothing to tell. The idea of me also moving to Alabama, while certainly a long shot, would've been Bargaining. From mid-March through most of April, my behavior was consistent with Depression... for example, I was withdrawn from and much less communicative with Aaron. That is really not a nice stage to be in, especially for that long, though I think Anger was a bit worse. And finally there was Acceptance, which is where I came to be in May.

Interesting... I used to think that the "stages of grief" thing was kind of silly, that Human behavior was both complex and diverse enough that it couldn't be boiled down to such a simple formula. And now I find that, at least in this case, it fit. Very interesting.

A few noteworthy events happened with Aaron in May. First, there was his graduation from ICC, which essentially raised the last anchor keeping him in Peoria. Then he filled up his car with possessions and drove down to Mobile, returning a few days later with Dave and Melissa in a minivan. There was a going away party, where Aaron announced that while he'd been down in Alabama, he had officially proposed to Melissa, she had accepted, and they had set a date. They left, with as many of Aaron's remaining possessions as they could fit in the van, the following day. He actually left quite a bit behind with me... a couple chairs and desks, a dresser, his bed, and the downstairs TV and DVD player being the most significant. It's kind of funny that so many items in this house were left behind when somebody departed... the refrigerator, dishwasher, and washer and dryer; all but one of the couches; several chairs, a lot of bookshelves. Technically, it's all mine, but I still tend to think of a lot of it like "That's Dave's chair", "That's Aaron's desk", and so on. About the only thing that I've really made the mental transition with is my cat Patches, and in that case, it's really more like she owns me than that I own her. :-)

By the beginning of May, it seemed like all of the other Psi Phi members who'd been participating at OkCupid hadn't returned in a while, and it seemed unlikely that anyone I knew would find me there. I decided to be just a little bit more open, so I changed my ID to "davidh_peoria", copied over my information, and added a couple of pictures. I marked the options "Friends", "Penpals", and "Activity Partners" in the "Looking For" blank, so that people would know that I wasn't seeking anything more than that.

After signing up under the new name, I started communicating with a few people on the site, including Kevin, in Bloomington. We mailed each other about Star Trek, games, and assorted other geeky things. After a couple of weeks, he suggested perhaps meeting for a meal sometime. Although it wasn't an inherently suprising suggestion, I did have to think about it for a couple days. See, I'd never been on a date before, and here was another gay guy asking me out. After giving it some consideration, I decided to proceed cautiously. We worked out a time that he'd be near Peoria anyway, and I met him at Culver's for dinner on May 30th. We talked about science fiction books, political satire music, and some other stuff. I had gone on my first date, and it was a good experience.

More on developments in this area next month. :-)

In Psi Phi-related happenings, we elected new officers (I remained Chief of Operations), I hired Xeen as my lawnmower (because I'm lazy and Xeen was looking to earn some extra money), and I helped Joel F. get his stuff moved into storage.

Other random things of note that happened in May, 2004:

Google made an initial public offering of $ee9.

I posted my first My Upcoming Week post.

I made a very interesting discovery at work.

Steve Mollmann sent me some secret messages in my blog referer. I wish the referer spam I got these days was as innocuous. :-)

Enterprise's season finale left my jaw dangling.

I saw The Passion of the Christ at the theater. This was, to the best of my recollection, the first time I've gone to the theater solo.

I played Munchkin for the first time.

So that's pretty much my May. Stay tuned for a June recap.

[Final word, spoiler warning]

"died"

Yes, Peter guessed correctly in yesterday's entry. I considered changing it to something else, such as "croaked", "expired", "redecorated", "pondered", or "sublimed"... but ultimately I decided that a lucky guess (some might say a "predictable" one) shouldn't deter me from writing the story as I saw fit.

In conclusion, here is the story:

Suddenly, his daughter collapsed.
"Why did you leave me?"
"I forgot my lunch."
"That's more important than me?"
"It was Mom's homemade pepperoni pizza; I love it."
Then she died.

Left ambiguous is who left whom. It could be that the daughter died of hunger, leaving her father in search of lunch, but not getting to the pizza in time. Or it could be loneliness, feeling abandoned by her father who himself got hungry. Either father or daughter might refer to her mother (presumably, his wife) as "Mom", so that's inconclusive.

This has been a rather interesting exercise. I'll have to try it again next November. :-)

What do you get when you mix two songs by a band called Nickelback? A very interesting musical effect. . .

What do you get when you mix two songs by a band called Nickelback? A very interesting musical effect. . ..

Apparently, this mp3 was created in order to support somebody's argument that this band sucks, according to the name of the file, pointing out the similarity in two different songs. But though neither song is of a style that I would typically prefer to listen to, I've found an intriguing synergy in the mixture of the two that I really enjoy listening to.

The song--or songs, perhaps I should say--really ought to be listened to with headphones rather than just speakers if you want to get the full effect. It's available here:
http://www.nintendorks.com/brandon/temp/nickelbacksucks.mp3

At the other end of the musical mixture spectrum, there's a mix of Marshall N. Mathers' "Slim Shady" song and Enya's "Orinoco Flow" ("Sail Away"). While the Nickelback remix is of two extremely similar songs, these two could hardly be more different, and out of that contrast comes a funny new song. This one isn't channeled like the other one is, so it should sound about the same in headphones or on speakers.

Language warning: a few naughty words are contained in this song. It sounds like some of the really bad ones have been muted out, but since I've never actually heard M.N.M.'s original version, other than snippets on TV, I'm not certain. Anyway, this one is available here:
Update 5/2: After checking some lyrics sites, I discovered that certain edits have been made to each of the Nickelback songs ("How You Remind Me" and "Someday") to get them to sync up like they do in the remix. A few lines have been removed from each song (in different places), and one of the songs (though I don't know which one) has been sped up slightly.

(I assume this also happened in Eminenya... the spoken word is even easier to manipulate than music, so I imagine that pauses have been inserted in Em's text to get the important bits to sync up with the important bits of the Flow.)
