+ 2 - 4 | § ¶Quick notes
Josh's mom and sister were here from May 9-16. We had a great time, including Mother's Day, when my mom and two brothers came over and we had lunch cooked by Josh. One movie I watched with Ginny (Josh's sister) was "Hoodwinked", a clever re-telling of the Little Red Riding Hood story. It was a surprisingly well-told, multi-layered story for a "kid's movie"; Red, Grandma, the Wolf, and the Woodsman are each questioned by investigating police officers, and as each gives their version of the day's events, we begin to see what really happened.
Marisa moved in as a new roommate last Wednesday. The number of Psi Phi members with whom I've lived is fast approaching double digits. (Hmm, let's see... Dad, Peter, Nate, Aaron, Joel, Josh, Joe, and now Marisa. Okay, so that's only eight so far, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go up again someday.)

+ 4 - 3 | § ¶17 down, 27 to go
I knew it was just a matter of time before it happened here. Now it's Illinois's turn to alter its state Constitution to specifically deny a right (which does not currently exist anyway)."Same-sex marriage is illegal in Illinois, but a conservative group submitted 345,199 signatures to the State Board of Elections on Monday to put the question of amending the state Constitution to ban gay marriage on the Nov. 7 ballot." wrote Rebecca O'Halloran of the Springfield Journal-Register yesterday.
She also wrote: "Eric Donnewald, director of election training for the board, said 25 employees will be looking through the signatures [on the petitions, to ensure they are valid]. The process is expected to go through next week." So even though "the referendum would not be binding", over 1000 man-hours will be spent on this project, presumably using taxpayer money.
If this non-binding resolution should influence the state legislature to follow through on its request, then 3/5 of the state Senate and 3/5 of the state House of Representatives would be required to pass a motion to put the question before voters at the next general election (non-primary) that is at least six months after the motion passes. I believe that would be November 4, 2008 at the earliest. Then, if either 1/2 of total voters in the election OR 3/5 of those who vote on this question say yes, then the amendment passes.
I can see it happening. Probably passing narrowly in the legislature, but by a pretty good margin among voters.
Alas.

+ 6 - 1 | § ¶Parties and visitations
Last Tuesday night through Wednesday morning (5/2-5/3), I went to the Psi Phi End of the Semester Party. We watched Army of Darkness, Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and the first season of Red vs. Blue before the meeting at midnight (including the elections; results in previous post); I'm not sure what they watched after the meeting, because I came home. I've come to realize with the past few parties that I can't stay up until 2am and still make it into work at a reasonable time, so I scheduled to take the morning off from work on Wednesday. With that, I was still at home when my mom got here. She came to visit for a couple of days, spending Wednesday and Thursday here. She also brought her two dogs, Kodi (short for Kodiak) and Lady. We watched Last Holiday (with Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, and Gerard Depardieu) Wednesday night; that was actually a pretty good movie. Mom and Josh also came down to $Client to have lunch with me Thursday.
Friday night, Josh and I went down to see his grandmother and aunt & uncle; we stayed at a hotel near Alton, and got to spend several hours there on Saturday. On the way back, we stopped in to see Mom again and went out to supper with her.
Tuesday night, Josh's mom and little sister are coming to stay for a week. I look forward to seeing them again. Next Sunday is Mother's Day, so Josh and his mom, and I and my mom, are going to probably go out together.
