+ 3 - 2 | § Electoral ponderings

In Illinois this year, one person's vote for either George W. Bush or John Kerry is extremely unlikely to make a difference in the outcome of the election, which, according to every major poll over the past several months, will be that Illinois' 21 electoral votes will go for Kerry. So now it's time to think strategically. . . (more)

Unbuttered popcorn + spoonful of refrigerated butter != buttered popcorn.

Unbuttered popcorn + spoonful of refrigerated butter == gooey mess.

davidh

+ 2 - 3 | § The streak concludeth

Yep, it's over. I redeemed my Pepsi cap today and got two bottles... neither one is a winner.

I think it was not my post yesterday that jinxed it, but rather Peter's warning about jinxing it that jinxed it. Silly self-fulfilling prophecies. :-)

davidh

+ 2 - 3 | § I'm on a streak!

Last Friday, I got a 20 oz. bottle of Pepsi from a vending machine. When I opened it, I found that the cap had "Buy Dew or Pepsi 20oz Get 1 Free" printed on the inside. So Monday, I redeemed the cap in the cafeteria with lunch, getting two Pepsis for the price of one. Inside the cap of one of the bottles was another winning message.

Then on Tuesday, I went to the little kiosk at work (since the vending machines don't take coupons) and got two more. One of the two was a winner. Wednesday, I redeemed that cap and got two more. One was a winner. Today, I redeemed that cap and got two more. And guess what. Yep, one of those two was a winner.

So I'm currently on a streak of five wins out of the last nine bottles, or five wins out of the last five purchases. That's much better than the one-in-six odds printed on the label.

How long can the streak continue? We'll see.

+ 1 - 4 | § A little trip

It looks like next Monday and Tuesday, I'll be in Chicago for a conference for work. Since this will be in downtown Chicago, and the conference starts Monday morning, I will most likely be heading up there Sunday night, and returning Tuesday afternoon.

Should be interesting.

I probably won't be able to write about the conference itself, but if there are any interesting events on the way up or back, I might write about them.

davidh

+ 2 - 3 | § Construction nearing completion

Well, one portion of it is, anyway... as we all know, construction is eternal. :-)

According to Upgrade 74, this Wednesday, the three closed I-74 on-/off-ramps at Gale Ave. will be re-opening, the new center lanes of Gale will be opening, and the last I-74 on-ramp at University will re-open. These three things will make driving a lot easier for me, and it'll cut my commuting time in half. (Okay, so it'll take it from about ten minutes to about five minutes, but still, that's pretty nice. :-) )

This makes me very happy.

[Looks like my prediction on October 5th was correct.]

davidh

+ 2 - 3 | § Minute-Man to the Rescue!

This Wednesday, I'll be taking the minutes at the Psi Phi meeting, as Kristen will be otherwise occupied that evening. Looks like I'll be staying up late Wednesday night getting them finished up.

Interestingly enough, this will make the fifth officer (if we include Jeff among the officers) to miss a meeting this semester. And when I skip the November 17th meeting (the first meeting I'll've missed since February, 1999), to go down to Alabama for Aaron's wedding, that'll be six. Jon is the only officer left with the potential to be at all meetings this semester.

+ 4 - 1 | § Local churches vandalized, robbed

The evening of Tuesday, October 12, three churches on N. Allen Road in northern Peoria--Northwoods Community Church (10700 N. Allen Rd.), Woodland Baptist Church (6915), and Redeemer Lutheran Church (6801)--were broken into, vandalized, and robbed. The church office at Woodland was significantly damaged, and cash and the pastor's computer were stolen. Several doors and windows at Redeemer were smashed, and again, cash and a computer were taken. The preschool at Redeemer had to be shut down Wednesday for cleanup. Details are not yet available about the damage and loss at Northwoods.

This story didn't show up on any Peoria media website until Thursday night, when WMBD reported it, although they didn't mention the Northwoods break-in at all, and included very few details about Woodland. WEEK and WHOI don't yet have articles about it. The Journal Star doesn't yet, either.
