+ 2 - 2 | § The last few days

This might seem out of order, but never let it be said that my life is completely linear.

The past few days have been full of interesting things that I haven't individually written about. So I'll recap some of the things that have happened, in roughly chronological order. . . (more)

+ 3 - 1 | § Star Trek: Enterprise season finale

My approximate quote at the end of "Zero Hour": "WASSSSSSS?!?!?!!?" (Read with a German accent for full effect.)

That's all I have to say about that, at least for now.

+ 0 - 4 | § Toilet scolds bystanders

Found at CNN.com: Talking toilet orders men to sit down.

This is about a device that women who live with men with "bad aim" can install on toilets. If the seat is lifted, the device speaks with a woman's voice, telling the lifter (presumably a man) to drop the seat, and to sit down instead.

Prediction: The men this device is inflicted upon will continue to stand, but they will leave the seat down when they do so.

+ 4 - 0 | § A couple of trims

Still feeling a little blah today, so I stayed home from work again, but I think I'm strong enough to go back in tomorrow. I'll stay caffeine-free, though, until I'm fully back to normal.

I was able to go out early this afternoon and get a haircut and beard trim. I've been meaning to do that for quite a while... the place I like to go (Ted's, over by Acme Comics) isn't open in the evenings, and only open Saturday morning on the weekend, so it's been difficult. But since I wasn't doing much today anyway, I figured sitting in a chair for a few minutes would be a safe activity that would actually be productive.

Later in the day, Eric ("Xeen") stopped by and mowed the yard. It really needed it. Aaron had been busy packing and studying before he left, and hadn't mowed for at least three weeks. And with the heavy rains recently, the yard was this close to being declared a jungle by the EPA. :-)

Trimmed hair, trimmed grass. I like it.

I hate being sick. I didn't go into work today. I'm still not feeling better, so I might not go in tomorrow, either.

+ 0 - 4 | § Hello, mystery fuse.net person

Re: your referer message "hi how are you doing, david? Do you like my secret message?", I'm doing fine, and I am amused by your secret message. Are you the same person who did that thing with the Amazon.com letter beads a while back? (If you are, I don't recall if I ever deciphered the message or not, but if you give me the letters again, I'll give it another go.)

Feel free to reply here, in the actual comments section. I might not notice it in the referer log, depending on what time you do it. :-)

+ 1 - 3 | § They've set a date; and other upcoming plans

I found out on Saturday that Aaron proposed to Melissa on Thursday (5/20). The wedding is set for the evening of Friday, November 19, 2004, in Alabama.

This was at the farewell party at Aaron's parents' house. Joel F. and Becky came for a few hours, and a bit after they left, Eric ("Xeen") arrived and hung out for a while. There were relatives galore, the vast majority of whom I didn't know. But there were also several of our friends there, such as Nick, Ed, and Chuck. There was lots of food (there were quite a few hamburgers and hot dogs left over at the end), including a butterscotch pie. I didn't know butterscotch came in pie form (nor that pie came in butterscotch flavor), but it was extremely delicious! I went back for seconds and thirds on that. :-) Aaron's grandmother also baked some tasty rolls for the occasion.

Other upcoming plans. . . (more)

+ 3 - 1 | § Fall 2004 TV Schedules

I've put together a handy-dandy chart with the fall schedules for the six major networks:
http://www.psiphi.org/tmp/networks-2004.html

(Note that Fox has announced their yearround schedule, so their column is a bit more complex than the others.)

It looks like my fall television viewing schedule will be approximately as follows. . . (more)

+ 1 - 2 | § Random name lists

Turn your name into a list of these, turn your name into a list of those. In an effort to kill some time, I shall do several of these. . . (more)

+ 4 - 0 | § At work recently

Wednesday afternoon, May 12, during the normal course of my programming job, I discovered something very interesting--a Thing Which Should Not Be So (TWSNBS). I investigated it a bit further, and late Thursday afternoon, I told my supervisor about the TWSNBS. Around 5pm, he and I told his boss's boss, who in turn called the CIO of the company (a Fortune 50 company) around 5:30. The assistant to the CIO called the boss's boss back later that evening, and by the following morning, the CIO had talked to a director, who talked to a manager, who talked to a supervisor, who talked to the person in charge of the TWSNBS. That guy called my supervisor back, and as I understand it, things are progressing on Making It Not Be So.

Now, the company in question is a Fortune 50 company with over sixty thousand employees worldwide, so having something I--not even an employee but a consultant--found, be routed up to the CIO (Chief Information Officer, more or less equivalent to Vice-President, I think) was pretty exciting.

In other news, I'm starting to use my PHP knowledge, which I've been gaining over the past year (since the Psi Phi crash, rebuilding here at Dave Galanter's ComicBoards), in the workplace, providing some assistance for another project. As much as I like Java, I do enjoy getting more of a variety in my assignments.

+ 0 - 3 | § More Hardee's problems

This actually happened a week ago, but I forgot about it until just now, when I noticed somebody who searched for "hardee's and commercials" at Google found my February 4 entry about some of the local Hardee's fast food restaurants shutting down.

Last Monday morning (5/3), I was running an errand across town by Peoria Heights, and I decided to take a small detour to see if the last Hardee's I knew of in town was still in business. As it turned out, they were, but they seem to have some problems of their own. I tried to order a sausage biscuit meal, but the restaurant was out of sausage. Out of sausage? They must either be doing so much breakfast business that they just can't keep up, or else they can't afford to keep basic food supplies in stock.

Now, certainly this could be an isolated incident. Perhaps two busloads of kids, leaving town on a field trip had been there earlier in the morning, or maybe the truck that was supposed to deliver supplies was delayed for some reason. But having the shortage occur on my first visit to a Hardee's in three months, when at least two other restaurants went out of business within a few weeks of one another, does not make me feel optimistic about the situation.

+ 3 - 1 | § The Big TV Event

There was a pretty exciting episode on TV last night between 8 and 9pm CT. Love triangles, intrigue, and of course a bit of laughter along the way. Great show.

Apparently there was supposed to be some "big event" on NBC at the same time, which about 53% of Americans watching TV saw, so you probably missed the "CSI:CSI" episode I'm talking about. Roller coasters, mysterious rashes, and Cleopatra... how can a group of friends compete with that? :-)

+ 1 - 3 | § Psi Phi Officer Elections, Fall 2004

There were a few surprises in the elections for Psi Phi's Fall 2004 Officers. . . (more)

+ 1 - 3 | § Google IPO's for e billion dollars

According to the Initial Public Offering filed by Google, they estimate that the maximum aggregate offering price for their Class A common stock will be appx. e billion dollars, or $2,718,281,828. I found this amusing.
